House Hunters‘ Tunde and Megan met 10 years ago in college. They were best friends at first, but when they both moved to Austin, TX (by themselves and for separate reasons), their romance began. Now, they’ve been married for four years, have two children, and ready to find a new home.
For the last four years, Tunde and Megan have been living at their current home. They bought it before their first child was born, but now they feel like they’ve outgrown the home. Tunde’s budget is $550,000; Megan’s budget ranges from $600,000 to $650,000.
Wish Lists
They both want a house with an office for Tunde. The new home must have at least two bathrooms, and either three or four bedrooms. They want an en suite in the master bedroom. They want a spacious kitchen and a large backyard, similar to their current one.
His List: Tunde wants a place with projects. He wants to put their stamp on the home. He also prefers single-story craftsman style homes.
Her List: Megan wants a bungalow or ranch style home with curb appeal. She wants a charming move-in ready home.
House #1, $550,000
The first home has recently been remodeled. It is a one-story ranch style house. It’s lacking the curb appeal that Megan wants, but it has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. This place has a lot of big open space, but a small kitchen, small bedrooms, and a small bathroom.
It has plenty of closet space, and it also has a home office (but it is small). The home doesn’t have a yard at all.
House #2, $498,000
This fixer upper home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It was built in the 1960s. The home looks completely stuck in the 60s with the outdated appliances, paint color scheme, and carpet. The place has plenty of space for the Tunde, Megan, and their children.
It also has plentry of backyard space. The place has a few quirky features that they could only get with this home. If Tunde and Megan buy this place, it would require a lot of remodeling and commitment.
House #3, $694,000
This is a two-story three bedroom home with two and a-half bedrooms. It is completely move-in ready. The home has a mostly open concept, but designated areas for dining and family time. The kitchen is spacious with new everything. The master bedroom has a dream en suite, and all the bedrooms are large.
Besides the price tag, the negatives with this place is that the backyard is lackluster and it has a very narrow design.
Decision Time: Tunde and Megan stated that House #1 felt like it had the same space as their current home. It was out of the running. House #3 had everything they wanted, but not a lot of room to change and alter. House #2 had nothing they wanted, but plenty of things to alter.
In the end, projects won the day with…House #2.
Megan and Tunde bought the place for $470,000 instead of the $498,000 asking price. They have began renovations and expect them to last between three to six months.
