House Hunters’ Brittany and D’Ante work as an elementary school teacher and a director of finance for a manufacturing company. They met in college. However, they didn’t start dating until they reconnected a few years after graduation. D’Ante and Brittany got married about two years ago.
A recent job opportunity has brought them back to their alma mater, Penn State. Brittany and D’Ante want to find a house close to State College, Pa. The area can be pricey, so they’re willing to live in the nearby town of Bellefonte, PA.
D’Ante and Brittany have a budget between $320,000 and $350,000.
Wish Lists
They want a home close to State College. It also has to be move-in ready with no carpets. D’Ante and Brittany would prefer if it has three bedrooms and two bathrooms with a fenced-in yard.
Hers: Brittany wants a two-story craftsman with a white kitchen.
His: D’Ante wants a contemporary style home with a small yard and a finished basement—possibly for a bar.
House #1, $257,600
The first home is in the Bellefonte area. It’s an attached carriage style home with three bedrooms, and two and a half bathrooms. The home is fairly small with only 1500 sq ft. It’s surrounded by similar style homes, which D’Ante finds creepy. It’s about 8-10 miles from State College. In the inside, it has a tight foyer with hardwood flooring, high ceilings, and an open concept.
It has an $100 a month HOA that would cover maintenance. However, it might cost an additional fee to get the fenced yard added. It has a white kitchen for Brittany, but it is missing bedroom space. The home has a big basement but it’s unfinished.
House #2, $330,000
This is a new construction home with four bedrooms, and two and a half bathrooms. It’s also in the Bellefonte area. This time it is about 25 minutes away from State College. It’s a craftsman style home with a porch and an underwhelming foyer. This home also has hardwood flooring. It’s an open concept layout with over 2300 sq ft.
The home has a gorgeous deck but missing a fence, and it would cost an additional $5,000 to $7,000 to get one added. It has a large master bedroom and an empty finished basement. It would require additional money to really turn it into a recreational room.
House #3, $395,000
This home is located in State College. It has four bedrooms and four bathrooms. It has over 2400 sq ft. It was built in 1993 but been newly remodeled. It has a nice front porch and a fenced yard.
The moment you enter this place, you’re greeted by a bathroom. So not quite the grand entrance that Brittany wanted. It has a big family room, low ceiling, carpet, large kitchen and this home includes a pantry and refrigerator, something the other homes were missing. It has hardwood flooring in every room but the living room. It also has a finished basement.
Decision Time: House #3 really didn’t live up to the hype of the cost. It was overall an underwhelming design, but it was the only place located in State College. House #2 was the furthest from State College and it needed some renovations. However, it seemed to match their wish list the best of the three options. House #1 was way under budget but it didn’t have much space in it.
D’Ante and Brittany pick…House #2.
They ended up paying $323,000 instead of $330,000. They already repainted some of the kitchen, and D’Ante and Brittany plan to remodel the basement eventually but right now they’re using it to store more things.
