This episode of House Hunters introduces us to Lauren and Jamil. They’re semi-newlyweds who recently moved to Atlanta, GA. The couple is currently living with Lauren’s aunt and uncle, but they need to find their own space before their baby arrives.
This will be Lauren and Jamil’s first home. As always with House Hunters, the couple has very different visions for their first place: Lauren wants a home with history, and Jamil wants something that’s more modern but still has an old school feel to it.
Wish Lists
His: Jamil wants a place close to the city. He wants a home that’s mid-century modern, especially if it was built in the 1960s or 1970s. Jamil also wants a place to create a recreational room for his music.
Hers: Lauren wants a place in a quiet area, specifically in the suburbs. She wants a historic home but wants an updated kitchen. Lauren doesn’t want a walk in shower, she wants a bathroom that has a bath, so that she can soak in her tub. Lauren also needs the place to have at least two bathrooms.
The couple also wants at least three rooms. Their budget is $200,000.
Home #1, $159,000
The first home is located in the Ashview neighborhood; it was built in 1930, and it has three bedrooms and one bathroom. It’s only a ten minute drive from Jamil’s job. Lauren and Jamil are immediately drawn to the sleek and clean hardwood floors. They are not happy about the appliances, and would update the kitchen.
They don’t like the colors of the rooms and the size of the bathroom. Jamil also doesn’t like that it has no rec room, no garage, and a really terrible looking backyard.
House #2, $165,900
This place is in Austell, a suburb near Atlanta. Lauren and Jamil’s realtor lets them know that it’s about a 20 minute drive from Jamil’s office. This home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The couple comment on the openness of the kitchen. They like it a lot better than the first one, but still want to change the appliances.
This one also doesn’t have a rec room, but it has little areas that can be transformed into entertainment spaces. They like that it has a decent backyard, but they would need to build a fence. One of the major attractions is the high-ceilings in this place.
House #3, $189,900
It’s located in the Collier Heights area, and it also has three bedrooms, and two and a half bathrooms. Lauren and Jamil think the price is too much, especially when they look inside and see all the renovations that it needs. This home is stuck in the 1960s, when it was built. It has psychedelic colors in nearly every room. Lauren especially hates one of the bedrooms that’s oddly designed. She calls it a mental hospital where bad things happened in it.
The big draw of this home–at least for Jamil–is that it has a rec room. This room is large with vinyl players and a bar counter. This home has a big yard, but it needs a lot of work.
Immediately, we loved the second home. It’s not what Lauren and Jamil wanted exactly, but it was the most attractive and had a lot of things that worked for both of their wish lists. The third home looked terrible; the rec room was the only redeeming quality about it.
Because the first home only had one bathroom, it had no chance of being chosen. Therefore, it seemed obvious that Lauren and Jamil would pick house number two. And they did!
Their realtor manages to get the price down from $165,900 to $164,000.
