House Hunters Recap: Old vs. New in St. Louis

House Hunters‘ Nicole annd Chris search for a new home in St. Louis that marries traditional historian character and modern comfort. The couple met online three years ago and eventually got married. Neither one of them are originally from St. Louis, but Nicole has lived in the area for longer, nine years to be exact.

House Hunters Recap: Old vs. New in St. Louis

Nicole and Chris currently live in her small bungalow style home that she bought prior to meeting him. They want a home big enough for both of them and their two cats. This shouldn’t be a problem with their $350,000 budget.

Wish Lists

Chris and Nicole want an open concept home with a large backyard, and a finished basement. They also want a large master bathroom and plenty of closet space.

His: Chris wants a foyer to greet him as he returns from long flights as a pilot. He wants a completely turn-key ready house with a colonial style. Chris wants a chef’s kitchen that includes an island with a stove top.

Her: Nicole wants an historical home that was built at least 75 to 100 years ago. She prefers a foursquare style house.

House #1, $365,000

House #1 was built in 1927. It’s a foursquare style with three bedrooms, and two and a half bathrooms. It has the foyer that Chris wants, but it doesn’t have the glamorous kitchen. Stain glass windows are one of the charming historical features of this place.

The basement is half finished, and half of it needs some serious work. The master bathroom is small, but the master bedroom and walk-in closet have a quite large size. The patio is too small but it makes up for the lack of space with a decent size backyard.

House #2, $305,000

This home is a newer built with a colonial style. It has three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. There is no foyer, but it has an open concept and a huge new kitchen. The backyard is very tiny.

The basement is not finished in this home, but Chris and Nicole see its potential. There are two walk-in closets in the large master bedroom.

House #3, $350,000

This home has four bedrooms and four bathrooms. On the outside, it looks like a 1901 Victorian style home, but inside it has been completely renovated. It has a foyer and is an open concept. Chris falls in love with the kitchen and its island, almost immediately. The kitchen also has the bonus feature of a pantry.

The basement is unfinished but there is a top floor that could double as Chris’ entertainment space.

Decision Time: House #3 seemed like the perfect blend of the two worlds. Unfortunately, there was no way that Nicole was settling for house #2. House #1 seemed like Nicole’s perfect place, but not the spot for Chris.

Despite the glaring issues, they pick…House #1

They bought the home for $360,000 instead of $365,000, and Chris bought a rolling island, so the kitchen feels more like his dream one.
