House Hunters takes couple Maggie and Bob to Bolton Landing, where they look for a current vacation home and future retirement house. Bob and Maggie met at work, and have been dating ever since.
They spend a lot of time in Lake George, New York, so they want to find a home to make their vacation time easier. They also plan to later convert this place into a retirement home.
Wish Lists
Hers: Maggie wants a farm style home with two floors. They need at least three bedrooms and two bathrooms. She wants an updated kitchen and hardwood floor. Maggie is okay with it having small projects.
His: Bob wants no projects. He wants an open concept cabin style home with a screen porch.
They have a budget of $250,000.
House #1, $200,000
This cabin style home checks off a few of Bob’s wish list items, but has many of Maggie’s dealbreakers, like carpet, only one bathroom, and dark granite in the kitchen. Many of Maggie’s issues can be easily fixed, but Bob is very against projects.
The place has pretty spacious bedrooms, enough for their families. It also has an updated kitchen and a nice porch.
House #2, $240,000
This home has two floors, and is more of Maggie’s farm style. The kitchen and bathrooms have been newly remodeled. It has hardwood floors until you reach the bedrooms. Those have a lot of carpet. The couple also doesn’t like that the second floor is in the basement.
They were hoping more for an additional floor upstairs, not downstairs. The bottom area also looks more like a lounge than a bedroom. This home would need a lot of remodeling, unlike the first home.
House #3, $280,000
This home is more of a ranch with lots of space. It has a nice window that allows for a beautiful view. It’s an open concept home but has a formal dining room. The kitchen would need updating.
The basement is huge with high ceilings. Bob and Maggie could remodel it and turn it into a couple of rooms. Bob is just worried about the current cost and how much work it would need.
Decision Time: None of the vacation homes had too much of a wow factor, which was expected with their budget. House #1 seemed like the smart choice, despite its flaws. It didn’t need much work, way under budget, and seemed to fit most of their needs.
House #3 just needed too much repairing for something already out of their budget. It was obvious that Maggie and Bob just didn’t really like House #2.
So in the end, they picked…House #1!
They only had to pay $190,000, and have slowly started to move into it.
