This episode of House Hunters breaks tradition by focusing on one man’s house hunting journey instead of a couple. Dick has a long history with Tampa, FL. His family has been major fixtures in the area for over a hundred years, so he feels a sense of pride and kinship with the area.
Dick has newly retired from being a judge, but he is often used as a expert witness in various cases. Dick has been dating Margaret since they’ve both became divorcees, and have known each other much longer as colleagues. Margaret won’t be living with Dick, but she’ll be staying over often, so she gives her input in the search.
Wish Lists
His: Dick wants something more traditional, especially with a brown color scheme. He wants two bedrooms and two bathrooms–and a space to display his heirlooms. Dick doesn’t want a single family home anymore, so he wants a condo with a lot of amenities.
Hers: Margaret’s only major wish list item is for it to be a more modern space.
Dick’s son Garrett acts as his broker for the condo search. He’s concerned that his “cheap dad” wants too much with a tight budget of $275,000.
House #1, $225,000
It has two bedrooms, and one full bathroom and one half one. It’s very close to the downtown area, which Dick likes. He prefers places really close to everything so that he can drive less. The high ceiling is very nice for this place and it looks very spacious. Dick and Margaret both love the hardwood floors.
Neither of them are too pleased with the view: The windows point directly to a parking lot. The second room is very small, and the washer and dryer in the closet take up all the storage space. The amenities are great; for $377 a month, Dick gets access to a pool, a marina for his boat, and a fountain.
House #2, $260,000
This condo is a converted loft that used to be a cigar factory. Dick loves the history with this area and place, especially because his great, great grandmother used to work in a cigar factory. It only has one bedroom, and one bathroom and one half bathroom.
Dick thinks the building looks plain, but Margaret likes the modern style. It has a lot of natural light but the one extra room space is too small for Dick. The master bathroom is very big and so is the walk-in closet.
House #3, $265,000
This one finally has two bathrooms and two bedrooms. The amenities in this one are also amazing with a firepit, pool, and plenty of lounging area. Those cost $304 a month. The kitchen is really nice and open but Dick doesn’t like the white color. He wants to paint it brown.
This one has a lot of space and plenty of room for Dick to decorate and store things. He doesn’t like the washer and dryer because they look outdated to him.
We thought Dick would for sure pick the third one. It has many of the things he wanted but in the end, he went with house #1–mainly because it was move-in ready. Garrett went to work and got the price dropped from $225,00 to $212,500 (can Garrett negotiate our property costs? Because wow that’s a pretty good deal).
Dick does a great job of decorating the place, and it really comes together as his own.
