House Hunters Recap: Housing Horses in South Carolina

House Hunters Dustin and Sarah love living in Greenville, SC. As outdoorsy people, they love the blend of beach and mountain life that they get from this area. Both Dustin and Sarah are doctors; he’s a veterinarian, and she’s a podiatrist. They met when she came to his practice to get toothpaste for her dog. Sarah used to work at that veterinary office, so her former coworkers told her that she had to meet the new veterinarian. It was a setup. Now, they’ve been married for thirteen years and have one son.

Their five year old son, Wyatt, is just outdoorsy as his parents. Sarah has a big passion for horse riding. She said it’s her stress reliever after work. Therefore, Dustin and Sarah need a place that accommodates her love of horse riding. Right now they live in a two bedroom ranch rental, but need something much bigger for their dog, Wyatt, two horses, and themselves. Dustin and Sarah’s budget is $600,000, but she wants to stay way under it–half if possible.

Wish Lists

They want a home with 30 acres or more. It needs character, so Sarah and Dustin would love a place with a built-in bookcase, crown moulding, a fireplace, etc. Their current home doesn’t have a dishwasher, so that’s a major must-have on Sarah and Dustin’s wish list. They also want their new place to be no more than 30 minutes from the city. Sarah and Dustin want a place in the country.

His: Dustin prefers ranch style homes with open floor plans.

Hers: Sarah prefers craftsman style homes with closed floor plans.

House #1, $339,000

House Hunters Recap: Housing Horses in South Carolina-1

This home is about 50 minutes from the city. It’s a plantation style home with 3600 sq ft. It has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The home is very outdated, but has a lot of character with the formal dining room, fireplace, tall ceilings, and exposed beams. It has more of a closed floor plan with lots of wood fixtures.

This home has a nice pond and a large backyard. It has a barn but the stalls need fixing. It’s a very dark design with a teal master bathroom.

House #2, $627,000

House Hunters Recap: Housing Horses in South Carolina-2

This is a ranch style home that’s about 30 minutes from downtown. It has 4500 sq ft, and four bedrooms and four bathrooms. It is about 18 acres. The place is covered in wallpaper, with some carpet. It’s missing a pond. It has an entire second living area that’s better than the initial one.

This home has a great view of the mountains. The kitchen is very cramped, but it more than makes up for the lackluster kitchen with luxury bathrooms. The master bathroom even has a sauna. This home also has a dishwasher.

House #3, $565,000

House Hunters Recap: Housing Horses in South Carolina-3

This ranch style home is about 30 minutes from the city. It has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. It has a big tree blocking the home. It’s not completely open but close to it, with the blue walls. It has a smaller kitchen but it has the dishwasher. The place has beams and deck, with a wood bed to match it.

This home has plenty of character. The outside is even better with a horse arena that has lights for when Sarah comes home from work late. It has 16 empty stalls, which is excessive for only two horses.

Decision Time: House #1 had potential to become an amazing home for them, and it was under budget. But it needed a lot of renovations. House #2 was very quaint. It felt very much like a family home, but very over budget and needed some work. House #3 seemed to have everything they wanted and needed, but it might be too much land for them.

House Hunters Recap: Housing Horses in South Carolina-4

In the end…they picked House #3.

They paid $545,000 instead of the $565,000 asking price. Wyatt loves the home just as much as Sarah and Dustin love it.
