House Hunters, Chef Julie and her husband, Ike, want to open and inn, so they need to find a new home near Owego, NY. The couple married ten years ago, and they own and operate a restaurant. Julie cooks and Ike manages it. The restaurant has been successful so they’re looking for a new project.
Currently, Ike and Julie reside above their restaurant, but they see their new inn as a potential new home as well. Ideally, Julie and Ike want a place with five bedrooms and dedicated bathrooms. The pair would live in the master bedroom on a different floor with its own bathroom.
Wish Lists
Hers: Julie wants a Victorian style home with character and history. She wants hardwood floors, a fireplace, and a rustic look.
His: Ike wants a colonial style home with a large outdoor space. He doesn’t mind a major renovation project, but Julie is completely against it.
They have a budget of $350,000.
House #1, $370,000
This place only has four bedrooms and two bathrooms. They don’t like that the stair entrance isn’t really grand or welcoming. The home also lacks some character due to all the recent renovations, especially in the kitchen. However, the backyard area is mesmerizing.
It’s the perfect area to lounge around and take in nature. The finished basment and family room also add some extra touches to make the space more homey and appealing.
House #2, $212,000
This home was built in 1812, so it is more of a Victorian home. However, it’s been newly remodeled. It’s move-in ready with a few stylistic nods to the home’s roots. Nevertheless, Julie thinks that the house looks a bit too modern–the renovation stripped away its history.
The bedrooms are also small, especially compared to House #1. It also has a lot of rooms with carpet. Carpet was on Ike’s wish lists but Julie hates it.
House #3, $99,000
Like Julie, we knew this place was about to require a lot of work just from the price. It was built in 1874 and also a Victorian style home. Everything in this place needed repairs and remodeling. It’s supposed to be a five bedroom, two bathroom home but a lot of the areas were big enough to add a few additional rooms.
Their realtor, Jeri, tells them this place used to be part of the underground railroad tunnels and a women’s semnary. Julie and Ike are both dazzled by the historical relevance of the place.
Decision Time: Obviously, since Julie was so against renovations, House #3 should be completely out of the question. Wrong. We learned our lesson from a previous House Hunters. We knew that they would end up wanting this one, despite all the work.
Also, we think that this home was actually the perfect fit, despite the major projects, you could easily see the potential with this home.
Of course they pick…House #3.
They basically managed to steal this place by only paying $62,500. Julie and Ike will have more than enough money to really create the ideal inn and home. We can’t wait to see the finished product.
