Engaged House Hunters Derrick and Jessica want to find their dream home before saying “I do.” The self-proclaimed yin-yang couple are both New Orleans natives, and want to continue to build roots there. Derrick works as a freelance sound engineer and Jessica works for a magazine called New Orleans. They have been together for five years and have a rescue dog.
Their current budget is $300,000, but Derrick wants to stay below it as much as possible. They want to move to the Gretna area because it’s only a few minutes away from New Orleans. They get all the luxuries of the big city, without its problems.
Wish Lists
Derrick and Jessica both want a fenced backyard and an open floor plan.
His: Derrick wants a cottage or shotgun style home with vaulted ceilings. It needs crown molding and hardwood floors. He also wants a large kitchen with updated appliances and a pantry. Derrick wants a fixer upper to add their own custom elements.
Hers: Jessica likes ranch style homes with modern interior. She wants large closets to store all of her New Orlean festival costumes. She also wants a move-in ready home.
House #1, $276,000
A main attraction of this cottage and camelback style home is its unique curb appeal. It has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The place is fully open-concept with high ceilings. The kitchen falls on the smaller side, but has updated appliances and a comfortable size pantry.
The lovely, large backyard would provide the perfect escape for their dog. The master bedroom lacks space but makes up for it with the glamour of the en suite.
House #2, $210,000
This home looks a little dated with the carpet, color scheme, and old appliances. It is not an open concept home but has a formal dining room and vaulted ceilings. The closets are large but the bathroom is small.
The most appealing part of this home is the bathroom, deck, and yard. There is also an additional room that could work as a storage space.
House #3, $239,000
This three bedroom and two bathroom home has the ceiling and wood flooring that Derrick loves, but it’s not an open concept. It also has a small closet and a small master bedroom. The en suite to the master is large but Derrick and Jessica don’t like its very bright blue color.
The kitchen is older but has top of the line equipment. It also has some very large extra attic rooms.
Decision Time: This was an easy choice for Derrick and Jessica. Only one home hit their brief the most, and the other two needed too much renovations.
Jessica and Derrick pick…House #1.
They bought the for $275,000 instead of #276,000. Since it was move-in ready, they just have to worry about decorating, not renovating.
