Fixer Upper Recap Season 5 Episode 7 - New Chapter, New House

In last night’s episode of Fixer Upper season 5, Chip and Joanna help Patti Baker who recently lost her husband to cancer. She bought a 1950s bungalow that she said “spoke to her” and it really needs some renovating. She moved to Waco to be closer to her sons and to get a fresh start.

Her house is a two bedroom, two bathroom home with about 1600 square feet. It was listed at $179,900, but was able to purchase it at $162,500 and she has a renovation budget of $88,000. This is what the house looked like when Patti brought Chip and Joanna by to see it for the first time!

Joanna has some big plans for this house. First, she wants to put new wood shingles on the outside of the house and has then stained a light color and make it look like a little cottage on the outside. The living room has a non-functional fireplace in it, Patti told them that if they couldn’t make it functional, she wanted it gone. After looking into the cost of making it functional, she decided to have them take it out. From there, Joanna and Chip decided that they were  going to move the opening into the kitchen and dinning area to the other side of the fire place and open it up a little more. Patti also wanted to have a coat closet added to this room.

Moving into the dining and kitchen area. The dining room is a nice size, but the kitchen is a little small. They plan on taking down the wall that separates the two rooms and then swap them putting the kitchen where the dining room is and the dining room where the kitchen is and have it completely open. On to the den, this room is really dark and there is also a smaller room off the back of it. Patti’s laundry is currently in her garage and she also wanted to have an office added. What they are going to do is open up the room on the other side to get more space and put a pony wall up to separate the den and office/laundry.

The master bedroom is a good size, but the master bathroom is super small. On the other side of the master bedroom, there is another small full bathroom. The plan here is to make the other small full bathroom a smaller powder room and make the master bathroom a little larger. This project goes off without a hitch other than an issue with what Chip thought was hardwood floors under the tile in the kitchen. This issue was fixed pretty easily with some new hardwoods that were used to “patch” the empty space from the flooring they couldn’t salvage.

After Chip did all the renovation with his crew and Joanna did all the designing and decor, Patti had herself a little retreat of her own that she could share with her family. Chip and Joanna had a goal to make Patti “cry happy tears” and they definitely hit that goal several times throughout the reveal. Here is what Patti’s house looked like after all the design plans were put into place!
