Fixer Upper Recap Season 4 Episode 13 - Tight Budgets and Big Dreams

This episode of Fixer Upper season 4 is about the Phipps family. Lauren and Will are looking for a home in Waco after being out of the area for about six years. Chip and Joanna are ready to show the Phipps some properties in the neighborhood they want to be in. The Phipps have an all in budget of $300,000.

The first house they go to look at is a four bedroom, three back and it’s almost 3400 square feet. The listing price is $269,000, but Chip thinks that they might be able to get it for a little less. The inside of the house doesn’t need too much work, just the removal of a couple of walls to open it up a bit and some updates to the fireplace and kitchen.

The second house they see is a four bedroom, two and a half bathroom house and it’s 2400 square feet, but it’s only $245,000. The inside of the house is a little closed off, so one of the plans for it is to get rid of some of the walls to open it up a little bit. The kitchen is a galley kitchen isn’t something that Lauren wants, so Joanna said she would open it up for her if they chose that house. The house is also filled with pocket doors, they plan on getting rid of most of those.

The third house they look at is a four bedroom, three back and it’s 1800 square feet and is listed at $250,000. It looks a little rough on the outside, but they want to at least look at the inside before they decide to ditch it. They do end up ditching the idea of this house because it needed too much work. After looking at this house, they did love both the first houses and asks Chip to talk to the sellers and try and get the price down as much as possible and they will decide from there.

In the end they were able to make a decision on which house they wanted and they decided on the second house! They were able to talk the sellers down to $203,000 and now have almost $100,000 for renovations. Here is what the house looked like before the renovations took place!

As you can see, there isn’t a dining area and for a family of four, that’s kind of needed. We know how Joanna and Chip work miracles inside homes though so I’m sure by the end of this, they will have a great dining area. They will be updating the fireplace and opening up the kitchen. There is a big oak tree in the front of the house that actually has to be removed so that the roots don’t compromise the foundation of the house. It was only a couple feet from the house and had potential to cause some damage to the house later on.

One of the things that annoyed Lauren about this house, aside from the kitchen, was the exterior of the house. They have painted that and updated the entry of the house. I will say that the kitchen in this house is huge now that they have knocked down the walls. Meanwhile, Joanna has an idea to take the kids to the antique store to try and find things for the house. Joanna is also trying to come up with some ideas for the playroom for the Phipps’ two little ones. Inside the playroom, they have also put in a Murphy bed so that when the Phipps’ have guests, they have a place to sleep as well.

In the end, this looks like a completely different house and it’s time for the reveal to the Phipps’! Are you ready to see what their house looks like now? Here we go!

We didn’t get a look at the master bedroom after the renovation, mostly because they only needed to paint it and replace the light fixture. However, we did get a look at the new playroom/guest room. That Murphy bed is amazing and it really gave that room a lot of different options. It could be the kids playroom, or it could be a guest room, or even an office when the kids get older and don’t need it.
